Talking to Services: Introduction to APIs
In modern software development, applications rarely exist in isolation. They often need to communicate with other software components, databases, or external services. An API (Application Programming Interface) defines the rules and protocols for how these different software entities can interact.
Think of an API like a menu in a restaurant:
- The menu (API) lists the dishes (functionality/data) you can order.
- It specifies how to place an order (request format, required parameters).
- It tells you what you'll get back (response format).
- You don't need to know how the kitchen (the underlying system) prepares the dish, just how to order it using the menu.
Why Use APIs?
- Modularity: Break down complex systems into smaller, independent components that communicate via well-defined interfaces.
- Reusability: Allow functionality or data provided by one system to be used by many others without duplicating code.
- Integration: Connect disparate systems, services, and platforms (e.g., connecting your web app to a payment gateway, a social media service, or a weather service).
- Abstraction: Hide the internal complexity of a system, exposing only the necessary functionality.
Common Types of APIs
While APIs exist in many forms, developers often interact with these types:
- Web APIs (HTTP-based): These are accessed over the web using the HTTP protocol. They are the foundation of interaction between web servers, front-end applications, mobile apps, and third-party services.
- REST (Representational State Transfer): Not a strict protocol, but an architectural style that's extremely popular. Key characteristics:
- Uses standard HTTP methods (verbs):

- GraphQL: A query language for APIs. Allows the client to request exactly the data fields it needs in a single request, preventing over-fetching or under-fetching of data common with REST. Developed by Facebook.
- REST (Representational State Transfer): Not a strict protocol, but an architectural style that's extremely popular. Key characteristics:
- Library/Framework APIs: These are the interfaces provided by the code libraries or frameworks you use in your project. For example, when you use Python's
requests
library to make an HTTP call (requests.get(...)
), you are using its API. When you use functions from your operating system or a graphics library, you're using their APIs. - Operating System APIs: Low-level interfaces provided by the OS for interacting with hardware, managing processes, accessing the file system, etc. (e.g., POSIX API on Unix-like systems, Windows API).
Interacting with Web APIs
Developers most frequently interact with Web APIs (especially REST APIs). Here's how:
- Making HTTP Requests: You need to send an HTTP request to a specific URL (the endpoint). The request includes:
